Apple’s iPhone 5se due to be revealed on March 15

Αpple’s latest iPhone, the scaled-down 5se, is likely be launched at an event on March 15 according to reports.

The rumoured 4-inch handset will be revealed at a spring event in San Francisco alongside the iPad Air 3 and some new Apple Watch straps, according to 9to5Mac.

The iPhone 5se is expected to sport new features including  an upgraded camera, Apple Pay and Live Photos, catering to customers who may remain unconvinced by the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays introduced with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in September 2014.

Apple has been under pressure to sell a more affordable smartphone in the past, and responded with the iPhone 5c, which had a brightly-coloured plastic case and did not feature fingerprint verification technology Touch ID. It was quietly discontinued with the introduction of the latest iPhones, the 6s and 6s Plus, last September.

Perhaps to avoid comparisons with the 5c, the new model will reportedly be called the 5se rather than the 6c. 9to5Mac, which reported the name, said employees were referring to the “se” as “special edition” or as an “enhanced” version of the 5s. It said the phone will be revealed in March and go on sale either at the end of the month or in April.

Apple held a press conference to officially unveil the Apple Watch in early March last year, and could use the springtime to refresh the smartwatch again, although reports have suggested that this could be pushed back. The next generation of Apple Watch is expected to be showcased alongside the iPhone 7 in September.

The iPad Air 3 is likely to sport some of the same features as the most recent iPad Pro, including four corner-mounted speakers, smart connector strip for attaching magnetic keyboards and a higher resolution display.

The company recently forecast for iPhone sales to fall for the first time, and confirmed sales of the smartphone had been the slowest in the three months to December since it went on sale in 2007.
